If you’ve been missing strolls along the Henry Robinson Pier in Port Royal, you’re not alone—and good news is on the way. After being closed due to storm damage from Hurricane Helene in 2024, the beloved boardwalk is making a comeback. The Town of Port Royal is inviting the community to celebrate its official rededication on Friday, March 28 at 4 p.m. at the Sands.

The boardwalk at Sands Beach, named in honor of former Port Royal Mayor Henry Robinson, stretches for half a mile along scenic Battery Creek. A favorite spot for fishing, wildlife watching, and snapping photos, the boardwalk is also home to an observation tower at one end, where visitors can take in stunning 360-degree views of the Lowcountry landscape.

A Leader Remembered

Mayor Henry “Luck” Robinson passed away Frida, Jan. 3, 2025 at the age of 88. A skilled tailor by trade, Robinson spent 50 years working at MCRD Parris Island. But his impact reached far beyond the sewing room.

In 1969, at just 32 years old, Robinson made history as the first Black man to run for and be elected to the Port Royal Town Council. After eight years of service, he was elected mayor—a role he held with dedication for 18 years until stepping down in 1995.

His passion for public service never faded. In 1999, he returned to the Town Council and continued serving the community until his final retirement in 2011 at the age of 75, The Island News reported.
