Gullah Campfire Supper on St. Helena Island

Looking for a unique cultural experience in the South Carolina Lowcountry this fall? Mark your calendar for Friday, October 17, 2025, and head to Morning Glory Homestead Farm on St. Helena Island for the Charlotte Forten Gullah Campfire Supper.

This unforgettable evening blends Gullah Geechee cuisine, live fire cooking by Chef BJ Dennis, and storytelling under the stars, all while honoring the legacy of Charlotte Forten, the pioneering African American teacher who came to the Penn School during the Civil War.

Celebrate the Legacy of Charlotte Forten Grimké

Charlotte Forten Grimké was the first African American teacher to join the Penn School on St. Helena Island during the Civil War. Each year, Morning Glory Homestead Farm honors her legacy with a themed supper. The 2025 theme, “Charlotte Forten: A Woman Who Embraced Outdoor Spaces”, highlights her love of nature, her resilience, and her impact on the Lowcountry. Guests will gather around campfires for food, stories, and songs that carry her spirit forward.

A Culinary Experience by Chef BJ Dennis

The evening features live fire cooking by Chef BJ Dennis, a nationally recognized Gullah Geechee chef known for preserving traditional coastal cuisine. Chef Dennis will prepare dishes rooted in heritage, including Carolina Gold rice, seasonal vegetables, and locally sourced meat and seafood. His cooking style connects directly to the culture and traditions Charlotte Forten would have encountered during her time on St. Helena Island.
